Succession of tenancy is when we agree to transfer a social housing tenancy to another household member.
This application form is to be completed if you are seeking to take over a tenancy from an existing Northern Rivers Housing (NRH) tenant who has vacated the property due to death, long term care, imprisonment, or other exceptional circumstances. Succession of tenancy is not automatic.
Applicants must apply as soon as possible or within 28 days of the changes in the household’s circumstances. NRH will not consider applications lodged more than 28 days after a tenant has passed away or left the property. In these circumstances, we may issue the household with a notice of termination.
Each application is assessed carefully against our policy and the social housing eligibility criteria on a case-by-case basis, considering your individual circumstances, your relationship with the tenant, your current living situation, and your history of residing in the property.
NRH will not consider applications from the following:
Someone who has been involved in illegal or violent activities in any of our properties or those managed by other social housing providers.
Someone who has been an unsatisfactory former tenant of NRH or another social housing provider (e.g., an unsatisfactory tenant includes one who has damaged property, has rental and non-rent debt or whose tenancy was terminated due to a breach of their Residential Tenancy Agreement).
Applicants who are approved for succession of tenancy may be required to relocate to another property that is more suitable to the needs and composition of the household.
Please note that submitting this form does not guarantee that a tenancy will be offered. All applications are subject to a formal assessment and approval process.
